Grave marker to be unveiled at Woodlawn Cemetery on July 11
The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War with the assistance of the City of Seward and the
Alaska Railroad invite the public to the headstone unveiling ceremony on July 11 for Joseph H.
White, who is buried in the historic Woodlawn Cemetery at Salmon Creek, 3 miles north of
town. The ceremony for the Union Army veteran will begin at 2 pm.
Mr. White served with the 73rd New York Infantry and the 69th New York Infantry in the Civil
War. In February 1906 he brought a shipment of lumber to Seward which was experiencing a
building boom at the Qme. Eventually he and his wife “Grandma” White operated the
roadhouse at Mile 20 unQl his death in 1916.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is providing a marble headstone for Mr. White’s grave,
which has been unmarked for all these years. AcQve-duty military and veterans are encouraged
to come in uniform, or otherwise wearing clothing represenQng their service. Volleys will be
fired and Taps will be played at the ceremony which is open to the public.
Parking at the cemetery will be along the side of the road, so the Alaska Railroad is offering free
shu\le service deparQng at 1:30 pm from the Seward train depot. Parking vouchers for the
harbor parking lot will be provided for those with train reservaQons.
